I first studied Art in the school of Artes Aplicadas Ramón Falcón in Lugo; after that I graduated in Fine Arts in the university of Salamanca. Then I took a postgraduate course at the University of the Basque Country.

My work has been shown in several exhibitions since 1988. The most outstanding of them are the Art Exhibition in the Netherlands this year and in some galleries in Spanish cities such as Lugo, Redondela, Ferrol, Ourense, Betanzos, Bilbao… among others. I also participated in collective exhibitions with other artists and thus my work has travelled to Paris (France), Porto (Portugal), Tras-os-montes (Portugal), Tarragona (Spain), Pamplona (Spain), Saraxevo (Bosnia Herzegovina) or El Salvador and is being shown in Santiago de Compostela (Spain) at the moment.

Both private and public collections throughout the world exhibit my pictures: in Nevada (the USA), the Provincial Museum in Ourense (Spain), the Deputación in Lugo (Spain) and a fresco in El Salvador. The councils of Betanzos, Begonte or Cambre in Spain have at least one of my pictures.

I also had the opportunity of doing illustration work for children’s books, posters and even comic strips

Sabela Arias was born in Lugo on the 24th of July 1969.

Her first exhibition took place in 1988 in her home city, but since 1988 her pictures have been changing as her life has changed.

She studied in the school of Artes Aplicadas Ramón Falcón and got a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Salamanca and then did a postgraduate course at the University of the Basque Country. This coming and going is a clear influence on her, marking the taste for new landscapes, in such a way that we can go along her work as if it were a journey.

This artist has always been searching for color, space and texture, and the motif becomes just an excuse in her world of pigments usually in a range of warm colours. This way she discovers different techniques and impressions that slowly melt into the eternal red of her pictures.

Bowls, torques, people, windows… the description of a society that walks past our sight so that we can discover new shapes and colors.

The motifs have changed over the years, even though she keeps working on color and the rhythms that are born from her idea of space.

Illustration, painting, engraving, use of space… we can say that she does not really care about technique or size, as she constantly changes them. Her work is merely a search for pure chromatic sensations

This text was first shown at the individual exhibition Galleries at the Ateneo in Ferrol, 2005.

After having a look at these pictures you come and ask what red means to me… and I can only say that the way I see the world cannot be new for you because Red Sorghum is a film that brings good memories, or simply because it is the color of Coke.
Red is the color of virginal blood, of innocence.
It’s the color of birth, of violent death, the color of wine, of the stop sign and forbidden things.
It’s the color of ripe fruit.
It’s the dot that attracts our attention in the Japanese flag or in napkin rings in bars. It’s the nail and lip color of daring women. These red rhythms are changing, almost aquatic, moving because of their place and the very violence of the color.
Red describes the color of poppies in the fields and bunches of flowers for Saint Valentine’s Day. It’s the color of the URGENT rubber stamps and the color of the pen we used for writing answers at school as small kids.
Red are the letters for most trademarks, those of the red box of chocolates.
Red was the antiseptic for unimportant injuries of children at the park and red were both my zipped cardigan and a beautiful hair-band I had as a six-year-old girl.
Hearts drawn on teenage notebooks. Fire engines. Alarms. Extinguishers. The light telling you that the battery is low. The summer sky. Nettlerash. Mum’s old car. I guess red is just a color that brings textures and rhythms from my mind to the canvas. And after watching it for some time its imperative shape becomes a little more friendly and inviting. I had never thought what red meant for me, I am simply attracted by it and after such a long time it keeps surprising me. That’s why I like red even if red is just a color. Even so it’s enough for me.
